Shared decision making in mental health treatment: what clinicians need to know
This webinar took place from 12-1pm (AEDT) on Thursday 21st October 2021.
About the presenter:
Dr Alana Fisher is a Research Fellow based in the eCentre Clinic, where she leads a program of research on the use of shared decision-making and decision-support tools to improve consumer uptake of and engagement with digital mental health treatments for depression and anxiety. Alana has previously developed decision-support tools for mental health populations, including a booklet and website decision-aid (e-DA) for people deciding on treatment for bipolar II disorder, which showed high levels of acceptability, feasibility, and preliminary effectiveness in a pilot and later RCT. She is currently evaluating an e-booklet decision-aid to support people with co-occurring depression and risky alcohol use to decide on psychological treatments. Alana’s research focuses on enhancing our understanding and delivery of mental healthcare consistent with the best available evidence, as well as individual preferences, goals, and needs.
By the end of this webinar, attendees will be able to:
- Identify the key rationale for and components of shared decision-making in clinical practice
- Articulate the potential benefits of shared decision-making for mental health populations, including those with co-occurring alcohol and other drug use conditions
- Understand ways of facilitating shared decision-making in practice, including via the use of decision-aids.
